Course summary

Secure your future career with our Computer Science (Computer Networks and Security) MSc. You’ll become a highly trained networking/security professional with the ability to adapt to the ever-changing corporate network environment. In the digitally connected world, companies are reliant on their information networks for critical storage, distribution and processing. These networks need constant maintenance to keep them operational, resilient and efficient – this is where you come in. At Staffordshire University, we’ll give you the skills that you need to progress in your future career as a network specialist. These skills aren’t limited to practical skills either, we include an in-depth theoretical knowledge of security policies and mitigation techniques, to ensure you are always one step ahead of the game. We'll prepare you for your Cisco CCNP qualification, as well as giving you opportunities to network with our contacts and guest speakers from our industry partners and collaborators. Many of these offer work shadowing or short work experience opportunities where you will be able to enhance your employability, which may lead to further graduate prospects. If you choose to leave before completing the full 180 credit MSc course, you are entitled to a lower award if you have achieved pass grades for the necessary credits. This would be 60 taught module credits for a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) or 120 taught module credits for a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip). On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: MSc Computer Science (Computer Networks and Security) Course content Our Computer Science (Computer Networks and Security) MSc can be studied full-time, part-time or via distance learning. Whichever way you choose to study, your learning will be split into three teaching blocks. The first two teaching blocks consist of 8 core modules that aim to give you an expert-level understanding of networks and security. These include Virtualisation, Professional Switched Networks, Operating System Security, Professional Secure Networks, and more. During this, there’s also the option to gain Amazon Web Services certification The final teaching block is devoted to your MSc dissertation and is your chance to specialise in whatever field of computer networks and security you choose. This will be supervised by one of our expert academics and is a chance to showcase your knowledge and launch yourself into your networking career.

Assessment method

There are two types of assessments: practice (also called formative) or formal (also called summative). Practice assessments do not count towards your final mark. These are your chance to test your understanding – and learn how to improve for the real thing. You’ll have formal assessments, typically at the end of each module. These could include essays, exams, practical assessments or portfolios. If you hold a CCNP qualification or higher (other vendor qualifications accepted to), some modules might be accredited through RPL.


Entry requirements

An undergraduate honours degree (grade 2.2 or above in a related computing discipline, Telecommunications or electronics/communications from a UK University or the international equivalent. If you do not meet the above but have significant appropriate experience, your application will be considered, provided that you satisfy the University that you are capable of responding to the challenge of postgraduate work. If your first language is not English, you will need to demonstrate that you are fluent enough to cope with the course. A minimum score of IELTS 6 or TOEFL 550 (213 computer-based) is normally required.
