Course summary
The Master's helps to develop leaders who can respond effectively to the economic, social and environmental challenges facing the world and lead others to achieve positive change. The Master of Studies (MSt) in Sustainability Leadership is a full Master’s degree, delivered part time for working professionals. It is part of the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership's (CISL) mission to empower individuals and organisations to take leadership to tackle critical global challenges. It is fully accredited by the University of Cambridge, and is delivered as an interdisciplinary programme by CISL, drawing on academic expertise from, among others Departments of Engineering, Geography, Land Economy and the Cambridge Judge Business School. Both academic excellence and practical application in a business context are prioritised in the competitive selection process, and in the design and delivery of the programme. Assessment is through short practical assignments as well as an extended research assignment. The programme attracts an exceptional calibre of senior and mid-career leaders from all across the world, and a range of business sectors. Applicants may wish to formalise their credentials as sustainability professionals, or gain a better understanding of how sustainability risks and opportunities apply to mainstream business functions. We likewise appeal to leaders from the not-for-profit or public sectors who wish to work together with the private sector to address sustainability challenges.
Modules
The primary approaches to teaching and learning are: taught plenary and small group sessions by academics and practitioners, who are thought lead-ers and/or case study contributors; group work, involving dialogue, debate and presentations throughout the taught modules, as well as a group research assignment; experiential techniques including role plays, simulations, debates and field trips; individual work, involving structured reading and reflection, research, and written presentation of findings on selected topics; support and facilitation by a CISL-led team of faculty, tutors and supervisors from within the University; and a collaborative E-learning programme, including three online modules, webinars and content-based discussions to maximise knowledge sharing.
Assessment method
Dissertation: 15,000 words maximum; including footnotes and appendices, but excluding bibliography; 2 3,000 word written paper; 1 7,000 project; the dissertation will include an oral presentation of the project work.
Entry requirements
2.1 Honours degree from a UK university or an equivalent standard from an overseas institution; a minimum of 3 years' work experience; demonstrable enthusiasm and/or aptitude for sustainability leadership; good ability in written and spoken English language; endorsement from an employer or, if independent, from an organisation that will be the focus of your work on the programme; access to appropriate computer technology and internet software. Applicants whose 1st language is not English should have an IELTS score of 7.5 (a minimum of 7.0 in each individual component).
