OVERVIEW The BSc (Hons) Biomedcal Science is professionally accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). Biomedical Sciences is a key subject area encompassing all areas of biology related to human health and disease. This highly topical, dynamic area is continually advancing, contributing important benefits not only to the health of individuals and the nation, but also to the economic activity and well-being of nations. This degree will provide you with a broad understanding of the scientific basis of human health and disease. IN addition to your developmed knowledge in biomedical science, you wil be prepared for roles which require you exercise professionalism, independent thought, personal responsibility and decision-making in complex and unpredictable circumstances The degree is uderpinned by a number of related sciences, including: biology, chemistry, mathematics and statistical modelling, and information technology. You will then progress to study more advanced biomedical science subjects including: biochemistry, human anatomy, physiology, genetics, immunology, microbiology etc. Biomedical scientists play an essential role in the identification of diseases and improving the provision of healthcare; this degree prepares you for a rewrding and exciting career in this field. PRACTICAL FOCUS This degree contains a significant work-related learning component, allowing students to choose optional work-related modules in third year (20, 40 or 60 credit modules).  Upon progression to the final year of study (Year 4), if you opted to take the 40-credit Work-related Learning module in Year 3. then you will be required to take the Integrative Human Physiology module in place of the Public Health Microbiology module. Similarly, upon progression to the final year of studies, if you opted to take the 60-credit Work-related Learning module in Year 3, then you be required to take the Integrative Human Physiology and Clinical Genetics modulesin Year 4.  It is also possible for you to undertake a year out in an approved clinical laboratory to graduate with a BSc Honours Biomedical Science 'with sandwich'. If you opt for the 'sandwich' degree, your placement may allow you to satisfy part or full completion of the IBMS Registration Portfolio. Once you have completed this, you can apply to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to be registered. PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION The BSc (Hons) Applied Biomedical Science is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) - the leading professional body for biomedical scientists, support staff and students. CAREER PROSPECTS Jobs Biomedical Science graduates start at a slightly lower grade and undertake training while employed in the NHS. HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists working within the NHS have the same standing as other healthcare professions such as pharmacy, radiography and physiotherapy.
