Course summary

This Masters in Sociology & Research Methods will provide you with research skills for qualitative and quantitative social investigation and theoretical knowledge of key problems in the philosophy of social science. WHY THIS PROGRAMME

  • You will develop your knowledge of sociology, including a critical understanding of social theory and a knowledge of empirical research studies.
  • The programme will provide you with an advanced education in sociology, but can also serve as preparation for further sociological research in a PhD, to which many of our students successfully progress.
  • It will provide you with the Economic & Social Research Council-required level of research training in the pathway of sociology.
  • Sociology at Glasgow is ranked 4th in the UK by the Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025 and 4th in the UK by the Complete University Guide 2025.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE You will take four core courses and two optional courses, and complete a dissertation. Core courses Current Issues in Social Theory Qualitative Research Methods Quantitative Data Analysis Research Design Optional courses may include A Public Social Science for Social Justice. Class and Stratification Gender Relations (Contemporary Critical Approaches) Introduction To Social Theory For Researchers Sexualities And Society

Entry requirements

2.1 Hons (or non-UK equivalent) in Social Sciences, most Humanities and Arts, and Language degrees where these cover cultural education as well as language. Work experience may be considered.
