Course summary

Develop your creativity by writing original music that focuses on contemporary electronic music including genres such as EDM, Hip Hop, Techno, DnB and Grime, whilst acquiring skills in dedicated music production suites. This course centres on electronic music production, composition, and DJ performance technologies. You will have access to high end equipment and resources including a dedicated DJ suite and Mac labs, and are taught by experts in their field, in a friendly setting, with other like-minded people along with students studying on BA Music Production. The Foundation Year route at Leeds conservatoire gives you an extra year to focus on your musical development. We have six industry-standard recording studios and seven mixing rooms. Our six Apple Mac Labs are equipped with over 100 high-specification iMacs, MIDI keyboards and audio interfaces, as well as industry standard software such as Logic Pro X, Pro Tools and Ableton Live. There are numerous composition, rehearsal and performance spaces. All of these facilities are open until late during term-time, giving you a dedicated, flexible environment in which to develop your recording and producing skills. Only at Leeds Conservatoire will you get the unique opportunity to collaborate with musicians from a variety of genres and with a multitude of specialisms. As a producer you’ll be in demand amongst our community of over 1,200 musicians, allowing you to build a portfolio of experience and establish your professional career long before you graduate. This course follows the same specifications as our three year BA (Hons) Music (Electronic Music Production) except that the extra Foundation Year allows for students who need an extra year of study to achieve the standard of our entry requirements for the 3-year BA. On completion of the Foundation Year you will continue to Year 1 of the BA (Hons) Music (Electronic Music Production).

Modules

The BA (Hons) Music (Electronic Music Production) with Foundation Year modules focus on developing you as a professional producer through small group work and individual production projects/portfolios. The programme structure has strands in Specialist Study, Contextual Studies and Professional Studies that span the three levels of the programme. The professional studies strand will develop your core business skills, and other optional modules will introduce additional cross-genre capabilities. Full module specifications can be found via the Leeds Conservatoire website

Assessment method

The course is assessed in a variety of ways to reflect the diversity of creative and professional practice. Assessment methods include musical portfolios, recordings, technical tests, in class assessments, presentations and written work. The exact nature of assessments will depend on the Contextual Studies and Professional Studies module options chosen at Level 5 and Level 6, as well as the choice of project for the Final Project module at Level 6. Formal assessments tend to take place at the end of each semester or the end of the year. There are a handful of assignments with deadlines halfway through a semester.
