Course summary
At Nottingham, we take an applied approach. You'll build your science, business and practical knowledge throughout the course. You will learn how to use the science of agriculture to sustainably tackle global challenges, such as how to feed a growing population. You'll study the production, nutrition, reproduction and management of commercial livestock within animal-based agricultural systems. Practical sessions at the University Farm include animal handling sessions with different livestock species. Visits to local livestock farms help you to develop your understanding within a real-life context. Modules in management teach you how to manage groups of animals from a business perspective. You can apply your learning by helping to manage the student sheep flock on campus. Topics include:
- animal health and disease
- nutrition
- physiology
- livestock production
- agri-marketing
- feed efficiency
- antimicrobial resistance
- environmental emissions
- Industry placement - you can add a year in industry between years two and three
- Study abroad - options include Australia, Canada, or Europe
Modules
In your first year you'll study sustainable systems used by commercial UK farms. By visiting the University Farm and other local farms you will see what you've learnt in practice. You'll learn about safe animal handling, and animal biological systems. You'll find out about the latest developments around the world. Core second year modules cover applied animal science, animal health and disease, and agri-marketing. You also take our Enterprise Management Challenge. Working in teams to manage your own sheep flock, you make all the agricultural science and business decisions. You'll observe the impact of your decisions as these are implemented on the farm. In your final year, you'll study livestock production systems, analysing performance and providing solutions. Your final year research project gives you chance to work at one of the country's top agricultural research centres. Our academic staff are known for applied animal science research in fertility, nutrition, reproduction and product quality.
