Course summary

This course offers you the opportunity to experience the exciting world of engineering and to develop the skills required to progress into the engineering industry. It also offers you the opportunity to become a professional within the industry, with a range of skills in electronics, manufacturing, testing and fault finding. The engineering industry continues to grow in the United Kingdom, with a broad range of careers available. The Scarborough area alone boasts many small and medium sized engineering businesses. Engineering is not a single subject, but includes a whole host of disciplines. This ranges from Electrical and Electronic Engineering tp Mechanical Engineering, and is a constantly evolving profession as technologies develop. Because of this, the course has been designed to provide you with a broad and well-balanced curriculum, including electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, pneumatics and hydraulics and project management. In addition to these units you will study the fundamental principles that underpin all engineering disciplines, including Mathematics and Science. These will stand you in good stead for further studies at HND level. The course has been designed to have an even balance of practical and theory based learning. Practical activities allow you to develop skills through guided learning tasks and independent investigations. This course is primarily designed for face-to-face learning, with attendance during lessons for the specified hours within the validation document. However, there may be periods of study where the government advises TEC Partnership that it is not safe to open campuses, or there is limited access due to social distancing measures. If the campus is closed, TEC Partnership will deliver your sessions online and offer you the necessary support and resources remotely. If there is limited access due to social distancing measures a blended model will be adopted, with some lessons taking place in small groups and others using online sessions and support.

Engineering Design: The purpose of this unit is to introduce you to the process of creating products. It teaches the design process, working from a design brief through to the stages that are involved in the identification and justification of a solution according to a given need. Engineering Mathematics Mathematics is at the foundation of all engineering. You will learn how to apply a range of mathematical techniques relevant to the engineering world. Engineering Science This unit provides you with knowledge of the fundamental principles of the laws that govern engineering. This includes static and dynamic forces, thermodynamics, material properties to name just a few. Managing a Professional Engineering Project You are taught the skills required to create and manage a project intended to provide a solution to an engineering need. You will develop skills in critical thinking, analysis, interpretation and presentation. This unit is assessed with a design assignment. Electrical and Electronic Principles You will investigate the fundamental principles of electrical and electronic components, circuits and systems. The unit includes an insight into direct and alternating current networks, digital and analogue circuits and semiconductor theory. Digital Principles This unit provides you with an understanding of digital electronic systems. This includes the fundamental operation of combinational and sequential circuits. You will learn how to analyse and evaluate circuits in theory and in practice. Much of this unit is delivered by the use of practical prototyping and testing activities. Mechanical Principles This unit provides a grounding in the fundamental principles of mechanics. This is a broad subject including such topics as static and dynamic forces, bending moments and the conservation of energy. Electro, Pneumatic and Hydraulic Systems You will develop an understanding of the technologies and theory behind the operation of fluid and gas operated systems. Students will learn the real world application of these systems and understand how they are used in industrial applications.

Assessment method

The course is divided into units, with each unit being assessed through a number of assignments. The theory-based aspects of a unit are assessed using methods such as problem-based tasks, written reports and presentations. The great advantage of studying our HNC is that many aspects of your knowledge and skills are assessed through practical activities. This can include carrying out investigations on systems and writing reports to explain your findings. You will also design, build and develop your own systems and evaluate their performance, recording your findings and producing reports. Many of the practical assessments will also allow you to demonstrate your ability to work in an engineering environment. Project based assignments will allow you to consider real life engineering problems and demonstrate how you could develop or improve designs.
