Course summary

Want to take your professional development to the next level? Critically explore and apply concepts in education? Study for a Masters in Education. The content has been developed in line with current and forward-thinking approaches to education. The themes and subjects in each module have been developed to embed an inclusive and diverse approach, ensuring that the learners can explore a wide breath of topics that promote cultural, diverse, and inclusive ideas. Competence based learning forms the approach and structure of the programme and assessments, providing the opportunity to demonstrate and critique development, while underpinning this with critical application of theory and contemporary ideologies. This will provide the development of skills to enable the learners to prepare for the ever-changing world of education, the Fourth Industrial Age and building an inclusive identity in their own context and beyond. The programme includes the vision of developing innovative and confident educators in a variety of roles. This sits in line with the institution’s vision of developing inspirational learners who are part of their community and contribute to the economic and cultural aspects of society. The module themes and concepts bring the programme forward for education now and in the future. It has been influenced to be a continuation of the principles of the new Diploma in Teaching and Early careers pathway for the new Initial Teacher Training qualifications and standards. This ensures it meets requirements for a new era of educators, leaders, and autonomous teachers. The values and ethos that underpin the programme is to develop educators, leaders, and autonomous teachers for the future of education. To build confidence and resilience to support the demands of current and future education to maintain a highly skilled workforce. Examples of this include – Promoting a passion and curiosity for learning as an educator and being able to embed this into curriculum design and delivery. Fostering and maintaining high expectations of educators and learners to inspire and enthuse their academic and personal growth. Critically exploring the importance of educators demonstrating, maintaining, and evidencing current and forward-thinking pedagogical skills, deep subject specialist knowledge, understanding of curriculum design and leadership and awareness of educational practices. Being able to have confidence in evidence informed practice, ideas, and skills to be a reflexive educator and approaching research and evidence with a critical eye developing a range of teaching methodologies for their own practice, or that of an organisation from a strategic approach. This will include areas of assessment, research, effective integration of technology and beyond. Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion to be able to be proactive and responsive to individuality within curriculum. The changes have been a process of feedback from students on previous cohorts. This has been discussed and embedded into the programme. This was conducted through module evaluations, informal feedback from learners which is conducted as a collaborative approach to the curriculum. External feedback has been used from discussions with some employers of previous students who have successfully completed the programme and what areas have specifically influenced their practice. This has been considered in what themes have been kept within the modules. A specific module has been developed to focus and explore on the enhancement of technology, focussing on a fast paced emergence of technology to support learning skills and knowledge, Artificial Intelligence and modes of educational technology that brings together a skill set for the future.

Modules

Module 1: Contemporary Perspectives on learning (30 Credits) This module will analyse definitions of learning and explore and evaluate models of learning proposed by various contemporary international theorists. It will explore education on a global scale, international perspectives, and ideologies. Additionally, it will investigate concepts from interdisciplinary fields such as neuroscience, technology, and sociology to understand the importance of correlation of these to enhance individualised learning. This understanding will be applied to real-world issues in teaching and learning, offering students the opportunity to delve into areas of personal interest. Module 2: Transformational Technology (30 Credits) New and emerging technology is having a global effect on models of education and the history of this development will be examined in this module, with emphasis on the pedagogical impact of technology. It examines how models of information transmission and processing can be used to improve learner development. Emerging technologies will be evaluated in comparison to earlier technologies, and in measuring their impact on development. Module 3: Changing the Paradigm (30 Credits) This module will consolidate key aspects of managing a project including planning, research, ethical considerations, and leadership. Understanding research and developing and leading projects play an important part in enabling master’s degree students not only to design and implement successfully small-scale projects, but also to critically evaluate research undertaken by others in the field of education. This module, therefore, provides the opportunity for students to develop an understanding of the demands and challenges of using a range of research strategies aimed at investigating issues in contemporary educational practice, considering relevant risks as well as legal and ethical issues. Module 4: Education in the 21st Century (30 Credits) This module will explore and support students in developing creative and innovative skills applicable to various roles in education. These roles may encompass teaching strategies, assessment methods, curriculum development, Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) support, policy and procedures implementation, and strategic planning. The ability to think forward and adopt innovative approaches in education is crucial in today's educational landscape. Engaging in research, questioning, evaluating, and justifying new ideas and approaches fosters a visionary outlook in education. Module 5: Advancing Education (30 Credits) This module will provide the opportunity for the students to explore and review specific knowledge and pedagogy and how this shapes a curriculum. It will analyse and evaluate policy, statutory requirements, awarding bodies and assessment frameworks that are linked to a range of education context. Historical perspectives of education, theoretical frameworks and policies in education will be the starting point to research and critical evaluation of this. Module 6 Project (30 Credits) This module will allow the students to explore an area of practice and deliver a project within their own context. This will be underpinned by concepts they have explored during the programme and how this has influenced practice. The module will be an independent project with points of reference through the year to discuss progressed and changes. The module will include supervision sessions where learners can reflect and discuss the stage and development of the project with the project supervisor which will be the module leader.

Assessment method

Students will be assessed through a variety of methods that directly link and demonstrate application of the programme competencies. There will be ongoing, formative assessment during sessions and using blended and flipped learning. This will have an adaptive approach so it will meet the individual and diverse needs of the students. The summative assessment methods will enable the students to become an autonomous and creative educational researchers, that can move educational development forward through knowledge understanding, professional skills and attributes that are required and will shape education now and in the future. Assessment will be through strategies which allow students to link their learning to their professional settings and practice and to develop action research approaches to improving teaching and learning. There will be full consideration of ethical issues arising in relation to this approach and these will be formally recorded and monitored. Methods will include written assignments, case studies, podcasts, video or voice recording, Posters, reviews, presentations, research projects and portfolios. The course will model good practice in inclusion and addressing diversity by embedding different approaches to assessment across the modules. This will enable students to demonstrate learning in a variety of ways and to develop communication skills through writing, building portfolios, giving presentations and using electronic media.


Entry requirements

Preferably a 2:2 degree (UK standard) in a subject relevant to the course of study or a 2:2 degree (UK standard) plus further study relating to education (e.g. PGCE). Relevant current practice in an educational setting. Other qualifications and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
