Course summary
Our Automotive Engineering course will encourage you to innovate and work collaboratively with tutors, experts and peers to gain practical and theoretical engineering skills that modern employers want. You will learn how to use the Conceive – Design – Implement – Operate (CDIO) teaching framework, so you can work on projects from initial design to implementation, and address developing challenges in the industry, such as lightweight structures, energy efficient transportation and sustainable design during your studies. Gain practical experience so you can work in every aspect of the industry, from suspension to chassis and manufacturing systems. Our graduates have progressed into roles with leading manufacturers such as Jaguar Land Rover and Ford Motor Company. We are one of the UK universities taking part in the international Formula Student event at Silverstone, hosted by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). Our team is truly interdisciplinary, attracting students from a wide range of courses, all contributing towards our goal to bring engineering skills, team spirit and employment-relevant skills together. Professional Placement Year This course offers a professional placement year. This allows you to spend a whole year with an employer, between the second and third years of your degree, and is a great way to find out more about your chosen career. Some students even return to the same employers after completing their studies. The University will draw on its extensive network of local, regional and national employers to support you in finding a suitable placement to complement your chosen area of study. If you do not find a suitable placement, you will be automatically transferred back to the standard, non-placement version of the course. Please note that fees are payable during your placement year. For details, visit the course page on the Birmingham City University website.
