Course summary

Our faculty are experts in their fields and active on both sides of the Atlantic. This means you’ll be guided and supervised through your research project by leading practitioners. We welcome research applications focusing on the social and political history of the United States. Much of our research focuses on:

  • US race relations from slavery to civil rights, the Black Power movement and Black Lives Matter
  • the Cold War and transnationalism after World War II
  • transnational race relations
  • the Civil War era
  • the history of American racial violence.

Assessment method

You are assessed by a 40,000-word thesis.


Entry requirements

You’re normally expected to have a Masters degree and an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree. Your qualification should be in a field related to your chosen area of research. You may also be considered for the degree if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing.
