Course summary

This course has been designed for both practising engineers and those considering a career in engineering. It will provide you with an in-depth insight into the technical workings, management and economics of the electrical power industry. Objectives This programme has been designed to meet the industrial demand for the training and education of both existing and future engineers in the advanced concepts of sustainable electrical power and energy generation. The aims are to produce graduates of a high calibre with the right skills and knowledge who will be capable of leading teams involved in the operation, control, design, regulation and management of power systems and networks of the future. The programme aims to:

  • Provide you with the ability to critically evaluate methodologies, analytical procedures and research methods
  • Provide an advanced education in electrical power engineering
  • Give you the education, knowledge and the skills you need to make sound decisions in a rapidly changing electricity supply industry
  • Provide a sound understanding of the principles and techniques of electrical power engineering.
  • Give a broad knowledge of the issues and problems faced by electrical power engineers
  • Give a solid working knowledge of the techniques used to solve these problems
  • Provide a foundation in power systems principles for graduates with an engineering background
  • Demonstrate the practical relevance of these principles to the operation of successful enterprises in the broad field of electrical power engineering
  • Familiarise professional engineers and graduates with the theory and application of new technologies applied to power systems.
The course is course is accredited by The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Modules

Students are expected to complete all the modules in this two year period. The teaching periods are structured to deliver core modules in a sequence which permits engagement by part-time students alongside full-time students.

  • Intro to Power Systems & Energy Management (15 credits)
  • Transmission & Distribution Sys. Management with Smart Grid Technologies (15 credits)
  • Power Electronics (15 credits)
  • Power Systems Protection and Grid Stability (15 credits)
  • Supply Chain Management for the Power Generation Sector (15 credits)
  • Renewable Energy Fundamentals & Sustainable Energy Technologies (15 credits)
  • Power Systems Design and Simulation (15 credits)
  • Economics of the Power Industry (15 credits)
  • Dissertation (60 credits)
This dissertation forms a major part of the work during the year and provides you with the opportunity to develop your ability to work independently, making your own contribution to the subject area and drawing conclusions therefrom.

Assessment method

The programme consists of eight core modules, augmented by reading and assessed coursework. Group work and individual projects are important. You will have the opportunity to attain further skills on oral presentation, team work, cognitive and research skills. Modules will be assessed on coursework, invigilated tests and unseen exams. A feature of the programme is that some lectures are delivered by visiting lecturers from industry. A further feature is the fact that typically 50% of the students work fulltime in various parts of the energy industry. This brings the benefit of information exchange based on real experience, which enhances the learning process. The teaching and learning strategy is based on lectures, supported wherever appropriate by laboratory coursework. Assessment for the taught elements of the programme is based on coursework and written examinations. The dissertation aims to provide you with the opportunity to deal with problems in areas where new subject knowledge is required. This involves literature search, assessment of the relevance of previous work, the development of the research task and the presentation of research results. The research dissertation is assessed primarily through a dissertation but with contributions from work carried out during the dissertation period and presentation.
