Course summary
The RCM Master of Education is an advanced taught degree programme with research elements that develops students’ vocational skills by building on their music educational experience out in the profession. The programme is suitable for orchestral and other graduate professional musicians who have experience in education (educational work, community music, individual teaching, etc.), conservatoire Junior Department teachers; music staff in specialist schools, senior College/conservatoire professors new to higher education teaching, music teachers working in schools, community, and other settings, who satisfy the application requirements. The programme is designed to fit around a professional musician’s portfolio career commitments. Students complete a major independent research project based on their own experience, and build a portfolio of practice evidencing their professional development. Contact time is structured around intensive study blocks with weekly face to face classes and observational placement opportunities for some optional modules. Students study a combination of modules that enable them to analyse, develop and share their own practice, building a portfolio of evidence and conducting in-depth action research investigating an area of their own choice. The full-time course is taught over 12 months (recommended for students requiring a visa to study in the UK). The programme is also available on a part time basis over a period of two to four years. Please note that this programme is not an initial teacher education programme and therefore does not carry UK Qualified Teacher Status.

Principal study options
During the application and audition process, you must select which instrument(s) you wish to specialise in for the duration of your course. On this course, you can choose from the following options:
Single specialism
Only one instrument is studied. It may be possible to study a further instrument formatively, but this will not contribute towards the qualification.
Instrument/specialisms
For all courses, you must select at least one specialism from the 'primary' list. For those studying primary/secondary pathways, two instruments may be selected – one from the 'primary' list and one from the 'secondary' list. Joint pathway students may select any two instruments from either list.

International applicants
The Royal College of Music has a long tradition of welcoming international students from all over the world. Our broad community of staff and students makes the RCM an exciting and diverse hub of musical activity. Almost half of our students are from outside the UK, studying at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The application process is the same for students of all nationalities. This course is available on a full-time basis for students requiring a student visa to study in the UK.
Entry requirements
An undergraduate degree in music from a conservatoire OR An undergraduate degree from a university, with EITHER a major final-year performance module passed with a minimum of 2:1 OR the ability to demonstrate a high level of performance ability, for example with a licentiate, diploma or international equivalent. Applicants must also provide evidence of a minimum of 5 consecutive years of post-graduation professional experience in education work.

Additional information
Applicants are required to submit a supporting portfolio by the application deadline, including a reflective statement, CV and video of their teaching experience. Following initial assessment of the application and supporting portfolio, shortlisted applicants will be invited for interview. We do not offer interviews for the Master of Education at our international audition venues; however, we may exceptionally offer a video interview for applicants who cannot attend in person.
