Course summary

The Childhood Studies (with SEN) Foundation Degree gives you the opportunity to integrate study and setting-based practices, to help enhance your knowledge, and further your academic and professional learning. Flexible in its format and led by specialist academics and experienced childhood practitioners, this course enables you to work and study at the same time. If you are working on a paid or voluntary basis with children and young people in a setting such as a school, nursery, youth group or library service, or working in childcare of foster case. this course is a great option. During the foundation degree, you'll reflect on a range of issues that affect the development of children and young people. You’ll explore the relationship between child development and practices in the workplace by carrying out practical research tasks. You’ll also investigate issues related to disability, autism, speech, language and social communication needs, and sensory differences and physical conditions. Through inquiry, debate, reflection, and a purposeful integration of literature and current evidence related to child development and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), you’ll make meaningful connections to develop your practice and impact. You’ll explore the childhood issues related to SEND in greater depth throughout the course, and examine child development from a range of perspectives, including psychology, sociology, policy and the history of education.
