Course summary

The Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering for England is a one-year course suitable for young, mature adults seeking to reskill/upskill in the engineering sector.

Modules

In this one-year course, students develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the engineering sector by studying level 4 units. Altogether, this course has 8 mandatory units out of which three are core units and the remaining five are specialist units. All units have a 15 credit value. Core Units (Mandatory) Unit 4001: Engineering Design Unit 4002: Engineering Maths Unit 4004: Managing a Professional Engineering Project (Pearson-set) Specialist Units (Mandatory) Unit 4014: Production Engineering for Manufacture Unit 4015: Automation, Robotics and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) Unit 4019: Electrical and Electronic Principles Unit 4017: Quality and Process Improvement Unit 4021: Electrical Machines Study methods: A mixture of theory by lectures/teaching (70%), practical demonstrations/workshops (25%), tutorials/virtual learning environments (3%), guest speakers and mini projects (2%) with 15 contact hours per week over 32 weeks during the academic year. Students are expected to complete approximately 90 hours per unit for each 15-credit unit of independent study (i.e. on research and completion of assignments) and unsupervised form of learning (e.g. e-learning, e-assessment, coursework, work-based learning, etc.).

Assessment method

Assessment is through a series of time-constrained written assignments that involve design projects, reports, reports, practical, simulations, posters, logbooks and presentations and tests.

Qualification requirements

You should have GCSEs grade A*-C (grade 9 - 4) in English, maths and science or equivalent, plus you will take a college test in maths and general science/engineering.

You should have GCSEs grade A*-C (grade 9 - 4) in English, maths and science or equivalent. All students who are non-native English speakers and who have not undertaken their final two years of schooling in English, must demonstrate capability in English at a standard equivalent to IELTS 5.5; Reading and Writing must be at 5.5 or equivalent.

Additional fee information

The fees quoted for home students are for one year of study and include tuition, exam fee, ID card (which gives access to the college and facilities e.g. library) and college registration. The fees quoted for overseas students are tuition fees only – you will be required to pay an additional amount for course materials, exam fees, registration (£125) and ID. This additional charge depends on the course you are following and will be £100 to £500. We will notify you of this charge as early as we can.
