Want to make a difference to the lives of children, young people and families? The programme will develop the knowledge and skills you need for a career across a range of professional areas, or for entry into further postgraduate study. This programme has a number of distinguishing features including: an emphasis on interdisciplinary working, employability, internationalisation, research skills and social justice. If you’re passionate about working with children and young people aged 0-19 and seek a career boosting their education, health or wellbeing – we’ll harness this with academic knowledge and professional skills to give you the start you need to succeed. You’ll learn core academic skills in your foundation year to progress onto the full degree where you’ll learn about a variety of issues such as child development, outdoor learning and play, youth justice, equality and diversity and international perspectives.   • International placement opportunities – As well as including a globalisation theme, we also offer opportunity to study a semester in Toronto in your level 5 year of study (subject to additional costs).

Modules

Year one - Compulsory modules: Essential University Skills 1, Contemporary Issues and the Media, Mental Health & Wellbeing, Essential University Skills 2, Families, Communities & the Criminal Justice System, Professional Practice in the Community. Year two - Compulsory modules: Perspectives in Human Development, Professional Skills with Children, Young People, Families and Communities, Social and Political Influences on Practice, Play and Creative Development in Diverse Contexts, Cultural and Historical Influences on Children, Young People and Families, An Introduction to Practitioner Research. Year three - Compulsory modules: Researching and Evaluating Practice, Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Oppressive Practice (with work based learning), The Internet, Media & Society, Crime and Conflict, Identity, Personality and Social Justice, Innovative Approaches to Working with Children and Families. Year four - Compulsory modules: Extended Professional Practice Report: Dissertation, Enabling Practice and Empowerment for Communities, Outdoor Environments and Experiential Learning, Supporting Health and Wellbeing, Employability, Progression and Leadership.

Qualification requirements

GCSE English at grade C/4 or above. If you are over 21 and returning to study after being in relevant employment for a minimum of 3 years and do not meet the published entry requirements for Year 1 of our degree courses, please do not assume you are not qualified to join us. Our experienced Admissions and Academic staff will review your prior qualifications and professional experience to support your application. The Integrated Foundation Year programmes support your return to education and are specifically designed for students who have the ability to study for a degree but may not have all the necessary qualifications, skills or experience to join the degree in Year 1.
