Film and Media Studies (including a Foundation Year)

Course summary

Explore film, television and other media from a variety of perspectives, examining key moments, movements and events that have impacted and shaped the dynamic creative industries. If you have a passion for watching and discussing film, and for consuming and analysing the media, in all of its many forms, this course is for you. Alongside the theoretical study, you will engage with a variety of practical workshops and sessions to develop creative and technical film and media production skills. Our students look at the way various media is constructed for particular audiences, and also explore the role of media in society, its continuing transformation and the rapid development of forms and technologies. Students will also study specific directors, examine the history and dominance of Hollywood, and explore contemporary cinema from around the world. In the final year, students are encouraged to focus on aspects of film and media which they are keen to research independently. This is a great opportunity for students to pursue their own interests and specialism, and understand its relevance to a career in the creative industries. Foundation Year courses have been designed for students who do not have the necessary academic qualifications needed to enter directly into the first year of a degree but who have the ability and commitment to do so. Once the Foundation Year has been completed successfully, you can then go on to complete your degree.
