Course summary

The Certificate in Higher Education in Health and Social Care is a 1-year programme when studied on a full-time basis, which requires 6 hours of engagement in the classroom, one day per week. Students will also be required to complete at minimum of 125, paid or voluntary work-place hours over the duration of the programme within the arena of Health and Social Care. Vocational hours provide real world relevance to student learning and are imperative to success on this programme. The programme aims to:

  • Develop students who can assess, plan and implement care delivery and make sound judgements about the effectiveness of the delivery
  • Develop student’s personal and transferable skills including assessing and planning, problem solving and decision making, health promotion, interdisciplinary working, interpersonal skills and reflective practice
  • Develop students’ principles of integrity and compassion to support best practice, effective communication and professionalism
  • Enable students to understand the core principles of continuous professional development, whilst collecting and collating evidence to support this.
This course is particularly relevant to people already working in or looking to develop a career within health and social care. It is designed in a way that progressively prepares students for a career in a range of health settings and is underpinned by strong relations with a wide variety of community partners in fields such as community settings, residential care homes and the local NHS trust. The programme provides a range of skills relevant across a variety of different professions. Students who successfully complete this course may progress to Pre-Registration programmes training or work in areas including health and social care services across a variety of settings. If you wish to continue studying beyond this programme, it will provide you with a strong academic springboard from which to progress. Course progression routes could include progression to a pre-registration programmes such as Adult Nursing, Occupational Therapy, and Physiotherapy. Students may also decide to progress into Year 2 of the FdSc Health and Social Care at UCNL

Occasional changes to modules and course content may take place. Students will be notified when applicable.

Assessment method

The primary way of delivering this course is on campus. Students will receive 6 hours of teaching per week throughout this course. On campus teaching includes a combination of lectures, small group seminars, workshops, guest lectures and one to one discussion with your tutor. Additional one-to-one meetings with tutors will provide further support. Throughout the degree, students will be assessed in several ways, including (but not limited to) written assignments, presentations, exams and practical assessments.
