Course summary

We offer PhD and MPhil supervision in Criminology in areas compatible with the research interests of our academic staff including:

  • Causes of crime
  • Victimisation and victimology
  • Crime prevention and security studies
  • Probation, prisons and offender rehabilitation
  • Gender crime and violence
  • Hate crime and social justice
  • Forensic science and psychology in criminal justice
  • Police and policing
  • Security and terrorism

Modules

Recent research topics include: workplace bullying in the voluntary sector: an application of routine activity theory; approaches to the control of corruption in the public procurement system in Kenya: an institutional analysis; the efficacy of instructional methodology in basic police training and education; police culture in Malta; policing with globalisation and post-modernisation; police detention and rights of suspects: a study of the police and criminal evidence act, 1984 and Turkish Criminal Procedure Act; the effect of organisational values on employee theft; towards an understanding of organisational security: a qualitative study of senior management in 2 commercial organisations; community penalties: a toothless tiger in the fight against recidivism; hearing offenders' voices.


Entry requirements

You must hold a UK undergraduate (Bachelor's) degree with at least First-Class or Upper Second-Class honours or an equivalent qualification from a recognised overseas institution. You will normally be expected to hold a Master's degree in a relevant subject (at Merit or above) or be able to demonstrate equivalent research experience and academic writing skills.
