Here’s your chance to create intuitive digital products and ingenious apps that push the boundaries of user-centred design for the platforms of the future. With access to gold-standard facilities, you’ll become a master of functionality and create design solutions for the user of tomorrow. Students will learn from the leading minds in UX/UI design to combine theory with practice to understand user behaviour and design products and services to put them at the heart of the experience. UI designers are employed for the visual information and interactive design on-screen across a variety of applications, such as websites, apps, devices and augmented reality, as well as installation design, wearable technology and the Internet of Things. This practice-led course looks at the fundamentals of UX/UI design; user research, experience design, interaction design, visual design and information architecture. The course explores human-centred design, creative and innovative use of technology for products, brands, organisations, information, and positive change. This course explores the importance of designing for the end-user experience with intuitive user interfaces. Students will explore an understanding of what constitutes UX and UI design, as well as what makes an effective UX and UI design on websites and mobile applications. They will learn about the four most important aspects of UX and UI design: usability, interaction design, visual design and information architecture, and how these components can be professionally identified, investigated, informed and interrogated. Students will develop and create an individual portfolio of inspiring and resolved projects based on user-centred research and design experimentation. This will showcase both their creative and analytical skills and technical expertise.
Year 1: This design-led introduction explores core competencies in graphic and information design and in design and coding for the web. Students will begin to learn the fundamental skills of the UX and UI designer in the structuring of visual information and start to develop a fundamental digital skill-set. A programme of industry practitioners and speakers supplements and enhances the core delivery. Year 2: Year 2 explores more advanced interactivity through play and experimentation in coding. Encouraging a personal approach, the course enables and supports the application of both individual and group design propositions to real-world and imagined scenarios. Year 3: The culmination of three years of study is channelled into practical projects, which become increasingly professional in scope. A range of self-directed projects along with a major project of the final body of work forms the third year of study. Final work is appropriate to applied contexts within the creative industries.
You will be continually assessed through presentation of written and project work. Assessment in the final year is through submission of a dissertation and portfolio of work.
