Course summary

Explore cosmology and astrophysics at an advanced level, with an emphasis on theoretical cosmology. Our focus is on theoretical and numerical cosmology in the pre- and post-recombination universe. This course is one of only two MScs in this subject area in the UK. It’s for you if you have graduated from a physics- or applied mathematics-based degree with a substantial physics component and wish to learn how to apply your knowledge to cosmology. The Department is a founder member of SEPnet, the South East Physics Network of physics departments, which supports vital research, teaching and development in the South East. The Astronomy Centre carries out world-leading research in many branches of theoretical and observational astrophysics. Our particular focus is on the early universe, and galaxy formation and evolution.

Modules

We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to COVID-19, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let our applicants know of material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity. Core modules are taken by all students on the course. They give you a solid grounding in your chosen subject and prepare you to explore the topics that interest you most.

  • Project (MSc Cosmology)
  • Cosmology
  • General Relativity
  • Quantum Field Theory 1
  • Advanced Cosmology
  • MSc Project Research Skills (PGT)
Alongside your core modules, you can choose options to broaden your horizons and tailor your course to your interests. Visit the course page on our website to see some examples of optional modules.
