Course summary

If you’ve got an undergraduate degree and are striving to become a secondary school maths teacher, then studying our Secondary Maths PGCE with QTS will help you on your way. You’ll develop your subject specialist knowledge alongside hands-on classroom experience. Successful completion of your PGCE course prepares you to start your first teaching post within a secondary school setting. Our course is designed to prepare you to teach pupils in the 11-16 age range. Why Secondary Mathematics PGCE with QTS?

Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. During the year you will become familiar with the overall curriculum and the national strategies for teaching mathematics. You’ll learn how to plan and teach interesting and creative lessons which encourage enquiry and discussion and foster pupils’ enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. *A significant amount of your learning will take place whilst on placement within one of our partnership schools. You’ll benefit from being able to observe experienced teachers, gain practical hands-on experience and mentoring to help you develop into an outstanding and successful teacher.

Upon successful completion of the course you will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), enabling you to start your first teaching post within a secondary school.

A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required to enable you to undertake placements in settings with children. We arrange this as part of the application process. Please note that there may be a charge for the DBS check.

Assessment method

The course is a one year postgraduate certificate in secondary education. The programme is divided into two main themes:

Developing Specialist Subject Knowledge

We hope to change the way you think about mathematics teaching and learning, using practical and exploratory approaches in your own subject development and in your lesson planning. You’ll learn how to plan and teach interesting and creative lessons, which encourage enquiry and discussion. Sessions encourage you to unravel what shapes the positive attitudes to mathematics with the aim of helping you to become an inspirational and exceptional teacher.

Supporting Learning and Progress in the Secondary School

You’ll have the opportunity to explore creative ways to interpret your knowledge into a language a secondary school student can understand. We help prepare you for the classroom, allowing you to develop your own thinking, teaching and subject knowledge base to a level which you can trial in your placements. Themes include educational psychology, how young people learn, behaviour management, assessment, inclusion, creative and innovative teaching methods and designing learning. You research theories of child development, gain a greater understanding of current professional issues in secondary schools and develop your own educational philosophy. You’ll learn in small, friendly and supportive groups, designed to give you the confidence to succeed. Course tutors are experienced teachers and you’ll have a personal academic tutor to support you through your studies. Teaching is through workshops, tutorials and lectures, some with guest speakers, and through group work with other trainee teachers. Assessment is typically through the completion of a range of classroom activities, written assignments, reports, personal subject audits and the development of portfolios of evidence. There are no formal examinations and the assignments are carefully designed to help you to develop your teaching practice further. Upon successful completion of the programme you will be recommended for Qualified Teaching Status be awarded by the Department for Education. Two of the PGCE modules are at Master’s level and you’ll have the opportunity to continue your studies further to complete a Master’s degree, supporting your early professional development.

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

Entry requirements

* An Honours degree (2:2 or above) with at least 50% relevant content in Mathematics. * GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above (or grade C or above if awarded under the previous GCSE grading scheme) or equivalent. * If all or part of your qualifications are from outside the UK, we’ll need a UK ENIC statement of comparability. Application to the PGCE via Subject Knowledge Enhancement Programme: * If your degree qualification does not meet our normal entrance requirements, a place may be offered conditionally on the successful completion of a Subject Knowledge Enhancement programme (SKE). Other requirements: * You must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, and that you have the intellectual and academic potential to meet the required Teachers’ Standards by the end of the programme. * You should provide two references. Where applicants have current or recent experience working with children or young people, one of the referees should be a member of staff who can comment on their potential to train to teach. * Offers are subject to satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service enhanced disclosure checks and applicants must not previously have been barred from teaching or working with children. We also ask you to complete a health declaration to ensure that you have the health and physical capacity to teach. All conditions must be met by 31 August for entry in September in the year of application. English language requirements

If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 7.0 overall with no element lower than 6.5, or equivalent.

Sponsorship information

The Department for Education provides financial support for eligible trainee maths teachers, either as a bursary or scholarship. Eligible maths trainee teachers can receive a scholarship of £30,000, or a bursary of £28,000. You can receive this alongside a tuition fee and maintenance loan. The eligibility requirements for financial support vary depending on your individual circumstances, your degree classification and relevant academic qualifications. If your degree isn’t in the subject you wish to teach, you may be eligible for a funded course to increase your subject knowledge before starting your training.
