Modules

Year 1 You’ll explore the fundamentals of building surveying and construction, including building technology, design principles, environmental services and material science. Practical sessions introduce land and construction surveying, architectural drawing and CADD, while a residential field course gives you hands-on experience of the construction process and professional roles. Core modules Introduction to the Built Environment Building Technology and Design 1 Building Technology and Design 2 Indoor Environment and Building Services 1 Land and Construction Surveying Construction Materials for Built Environment Year 2 You’ll build on your first-year knowledge and focus on core aspects of building surveying in more depth. Key areas include building pathology and defect diagnosis, construction methods, cost and contract administration and professional practice. You’ll also develop skills in BIM and explore environmental services for complex buildings, combining technical expertise with sustainable and responsible design approaches. Core modules Building Surveying Professional Practice Cost and Contract Administration Construction Methods and Technology Indoor Environments and Building Services 2 Building Surveying Building Information Modelling (BIM) Optional Placement Year You can choose a salaried professional placement after year two, gaining hands-on experience with building surveying practices, property consultancies or construction firms. This year allows you to apply your academic knowledge to real-world projects such as building inspections, defect analysis, refurbishment planning and contract administration. You’ll develop practical skills in surveying techniques, project management and client collaboration, while building valuable industry contacts. The placement enhances your employability and confidence, giving you a competitive edge for careers in building surveying and related fields. Final year You’ll complete an independent research project and advance your professional expertise through modules in building pathology, life-care planning and advanced surveying practice. You’ll also choose option modules to tailor your learning, with topics such as sustainable construction, environmental impact assessment and project planning, allowing you to specialise in areas that match your career ambitions. The fees listed in the table above are for full-time UK undergraduate students in academic year 2025-26. You will pay further fees in each year of your course. Fees may increase each year. UK undergraduate and certain postgraduate fees are regulated by the UK government. The annual fee increase will not exceed the UK government's maximum regulated tuition fee limit set for the relevant academic year. Many of our courses include the option of a salaried placement year. Tuition fees for a placement year are charged at a lower rate of £1850. The international tuition fees listed above are for full-time courses during the academic year 2025-26. Further tuition fees are payable in each year of study. Non-regulated tuition fees, which usually apply to international students and UK postgraduate students* are subject to an annual increase of a maximum of 5% or the Consumer Prices Index (CPI), whichever is higher. *Some designated postgraduate courses are regulated by the UK government – the annual fee increase for eligible UK / Home students on these designated courses will not exceed the UK government’s regulated tuition fee limit set for the relevant academic year.
