Course summary

Whether you are a new graduate or an engineering professional, this course has been designed to help you develop advanced skills in thermofluids science and technology, fluid dynamics, structural analysis, heat conversion and recovery. You will learn with leading experts in the field on modules informed by the latest developments in technology and practice. This course is designed to help you meet the challenges of the rapidly changing global market, with a focus on advanced thermal power, systems and processes. As a result, your studies will prepare you for a successful career in a wide range of engineering enterprises. The programme has been developed from our research strength in fluid dynamics, structural mechanics, mathematical modelling in CAD, renewable and sustainable energy, gas turbine engineering, IC engines and powertrain, and advanced heat transfer. The Advanced Mechanical Engineering MSc will help you:

  • Gain advanced knowledge of the latest technological developments in advanced mechanical engineering, particularly in thermo-fluids applications.
  • Acquire an in-depth understanding of the fundamentals, practical skills and an appreciation of the latest developments in engineering solutions in the energy and transport sectors.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the general areas of Mechanical Engineering subjects and to extended knowledge of underlying principles of modern methods of control and design of vehicle and power  train systems.
  • Assess the behaviour of mechanical, aeronautical or electrical systems.
  • Apply advanced methods of analysis to mechanical, aeronautical or electrical systems.
  • Gain extended knowledge of the underlying principles of modern methods of design of mechanical, aeronautical or electrical systems with appropriate methods.
  • Appreciate advanced computer methods, e.g. CFD and CAD, using different software techniques.
The course has been accredited regularly by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), on behalf of the Engineering Council.

Modules

We explore air safety management from a broad perspective so you will be exposed to areas as diverse as human resources, regulation, and crisis management. The academic framework has been created by the industry for the industry. This means you learn from the former British Airways human resources director in one module, and the industry's crisis management expert in safety or the chief executive officer of a major maintenance facility in another. If we have an insufficient number of students interested in an elective module, this may not be offered. In rare cases, one or two elective modules may not run due to low interest or unanticipated changes in timetabling, including scheduling clashes, room and staff availability. If an elective module will not run, we will advise you at the beginning of every academic term or as soon as possible, and help you choose an alternative module. Following the Induction Workshop, the programme is based on completing four core modules and four elective modules over three to five years, which are taught over three-day periods. Teaching takes place across global locations including London, Dubai and Frankfurt. Students also take on a project/dissertation in an air safety management topic, which is usually completed within six to twelve months. Students choose their own research focus and often use the project as a way into a new career. Students who choose not to do the project, or are unable to complete the programme within the five years, receive a Postgraduate Certificate on successful completion of four modules or a Postgraduate Diploma on successful completion of eight modules. Assessment method

Each elective is assessed by two pieces of coursework, the core modules are assessed by one piece of coursework and an examination. Each module comprises: Part I: Prior reading before the onsite module where appropriate Part II: Attendance at the institution (or other locations) for the module over three days Part III: Examinations are held at the end of the core modules Part IV: Coursework for assessment. Coursework is required within six weeks of the onsite module.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be employed in the aviation industry for at least two years to be considered for this programme. You do not need a Bachelor's degree to enter this MSc programme, but you will need a professional licence, for example an Air Transport Pilot's Licence, Aircraft Engineer Licence, Air Traffic Controller Licence or similar. The mandatory Induction Workshop to our MSc programmes must be passed and will assess the English capability and writing skills required for the MSc programme. Students must successfully pass the Induction Workshop before commencing with the MSc programme. The Induction Workshop is a short course offered every three months, which means you can apply to the MSc Air Safety Management at any point during the year. Before applying for the MSc course, applicants must first complete a mandatory Induction Workshop which is held four times a year.
