Course summary
Focusing on translation and interpreting between two of the world’s major languages, Chinese and English, this exciting master's programme provides well-balanced practical training in translation and interpreting (consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting, sight translation and public service interpreting), covering a variety of topics. The programme also familiarises students with theoretical insights and methodological approaches that are integral to the field of translation and interpreting. Through this master's programme, you will:
- gain hands-on skills in practical translation and interpreting, covering different modes (written translation, sight translation, simultaneous, consecutive and public service interpreting) and across various topics (e.g. politics, business, commerce, media, culture, technology and literature);
- explore major theoretical approaches and core methodologies in translation and interpreting studies

Modules
The modules cover significant theoretical elements concerning the major trends, themes and methodological approaches in translation and interpreting studies, as well as essential practical elements that equip you with hands-on translation and interpreting skills. The practice-oriented translation and interpreting modules span across a variety of modes and different specialised text genres and topics. The modules will prepare you for your individual graduation projects, for which you may choose between a dissertation or a translation project (extended translation and commentary/critical analysis).
Entry requirements
The normal requirement for entry on to a taught programme is a BA or BSc degree of 2:1 standard in a subject relevant to the proposed field of research. All eligible applicants should normally have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant area relating to modern languages (a 2:1 honours degree or equivalent). Applicants with other specialised backgrounds or relevant professional experience may also be considered. Applicants with English as a second language should have a good IELTS score of at least 7.0 overall (with no less than 6.5 in any sub-score) for admission to the MA programme. Applicants with Chinese as a second language should have proficiency in Chinese (equivalent to the skills of HSK level 5). International qualifications: Applications from international students are welcome. International qualifications will be evaluated in line with the National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) guidelines.
