The Gloucestershire College BSc in Film Production with Applied Technology validated by Birmingham City University is primarily designed to provide Edexcel Higher National Diploma Creative Media Production students with a pathway to a level six qualification. Its aim is to merge film theory / practice, critical thinking, and technical competence with creativity. Delivered as a top-up third year after the HND programme, the degree combines a study of audiovisual technologies, management systems and contextual investigations to develop understanding and practice relevant to the production of digital film artefacts and to the film industry. Our graduates will be versatile, adaptable, technically literate, creative and business-like, well equipped to perform a variety of roles within firms, bridging the gap between technical specialists and creative professionals. This degree combines a study of the enabling technologies of audiovisual and communications with their creative applications relating to the production of digital films and a study of production management relevant to the film industry. It aims to merge film theory/practice, critical thinking, and technical competence with creativity. Delivered as a top-up third year after the HND programme, the degree combines a study of audio-visual technologies, management systems and contextual investigations to develop understanding and practice relevant to the production of digital moving image artefacts. Our graduates are versatile, adaptable, technically literate, creative and business-like. They are well equipped to perform a variety of roles within firms, bridging the gap between technical specialists and creative professionals. AREAS OF FOCUS: Script to screen production of a 10-15 minute funded short for festival distribution. Working on set (studio and location) with paid professional actors. Advanced lighting techniques. Arri Alexa, Arri Amira, or Red Dragon work. Nagra, Sound Devices or Zoom sound recorder work. Post-production with either Adobe, Avid or Apple software. Modules
FILM TECHNOLOGY: This module will allow students investigate key areas in film technology and the changes that have occurred which need to be understood in order for new practitioners to take full advantage of the proliferation of digitalisation. Through a practice-led knowledge applied approach students will conduct research, engage in tests, and study technology and its application within moving image production in this new digital age. FILM PRODUCTION AND DIRECTION: The primary aim of this module is the production of a broadcast quality short film for distribution at local and international film festivals. Students will gain production management and post-production skills required for their advancement into a specific department on graduation. They will become competent in advanced camera, lighting and editing. Learning is employment centred. Students will gain an understanding of opportunities available in funded short films, local independent features and international studio co-productions. FILM DEVELOPMENT: Crucial throughout the module is student engagement with the process of development from concept through to principal photography. In this module, students will engage in the development of their own short film aimed at the festival circuit. As cinema becomes increasingly interdisciplinary and transnational existing as ultra-low budget, independent, and big studio/television productions, it is imperative for entrants to the industry to grasp the importance of process across different production departments. INVESTIGATIVE TECHNOLOGY PROJECT: This module will provide students with the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills gained throughout the course to a relevant technical query related to technology used within the industry.

To study Higher Education at Gloucestershire College, normally applicants will be required to have GCSE English and Mathematics grade 4 (C) or above (or equivalent). The College will consider Functional Skills Qualification in English and Maths at Level 2.
