Course summary
Stories shape how we see the world — and screenwriters shape the stories. This course is designed for emerging writers who want to master the craft of storytelling for screen. You will explore character, structure, dialogue, and genre while developing your unique voice across formats including film, television, web series, and adaptation. With guidance from industry professionals, you will learn how to write compelling scripts and navigate the realities of the screen industries, from pitching to production. Upon completion of your HNC, you have the option to progress to a one-year HND programme.
Modules
Module A: Process and Practice (Year 1) Assessment 1: Concept and Development (85 Credits) This unit introduces the fundamentals of screenwriting including narrative structure, character development, and visual storytelling. You will analyse how stories are constructed, explore historical and theoretical approaches to screenwriting, and begin generating original concepts through creative exercises. You will also develop core technical and professional skills, including formatting, script annotation, and workshop collaboration. Assessment 2: Creative Project (35 Credits) You will apply your knowledge to produce a short screenplay, taking your idea from concept through to final draft. Working from a brief, you will learn how to structure scenes, shape tone, and write with clarity and impact. The process will involve planning, feedback, redrafting, and a formal presentation of your work.
Assessment method
Assessment is through a series of assignments including research modules, hands-on practical exercises and group projects. Units are interlinked to replicate “real world” scenarios and offer the opportunity for students to build a range of skills to maximise employment opportunities.
