Software Engineering

Course summary

Our professionally accredited Software Engineering degree will develop your knowledge and expertise in the design, development and delivery of software for modern environments and platforms. As a Software Engineer, you might find yourself developing beautiful websites, building mobile apps, or even creating the software that will bring the next generation of rockets into space. The accredited BSc Software Engineering degree gives you the skills this fast-moving industry demands. In collaboration with our industry partners, real-life problems and industry standard tools are the core of this degree. You will gain advanced programming skills in a range of languages and will experience the entire cycle of software development, from programming to coding quality, communication in multidisciplinary teams, software testing and debugging. You will develop an appreciation of software carpentry and ‘codemanship’: creating useful and usable software artefacts. In your first year you will cover essential computing concepts and develop the technical and academic skills and knowledge necessary for the rest of your degree. In years two and three, you will focus on the design and development of software for particular applications and will examine architectural paradigms such as parallel and distributed computing. This degree has been accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by BCS. An accredited degree entitles you to professional membership of BCS, which is an important part of the criteria for achieving Chartered IT Professional (CITP) status through the Institute. Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords. We offer this programme with two study options. You can choose three years full-time or four years full-time which would include a one-year professional placement before your final year that will give you hands-on experience in a real-life working environment. This year in industry would give you the practical skills that many employers seek, giving you a competitive edge upon graduation.
