This dedicated foundation year delivers a solid grounding in the fundamentals of academic study, as well as in the foundations of the tourism and events industries – providing a smooth progression onto the degree of your choice in festivals, event, travel and tourism or airline and airport management. An essential stepping stone on your tourism or events career, the course delivers a broad foundation that covers business, management, and more industry-specific topics, taught by active and experienced experts from a range of relevant disciplines, who are passionate about sharing their knowledge and experience with you. You will explore real scenarios and case studies, and learn to apply the theory you learn in order to analyse problems and develop practical, real-world solutions. And when you progress onto one of our specialist degrees, you will have plenty of options to develop first-hand practical experience in your chosen industry – from designing and delivering events to embedded work placements with local or international organisations, and more. Festivals and events students had exciting CV enhancing paid placements at major festivals such as Glastonbury, Leeds, Reading, Latitude and more in 2019, while tourism students get to take part in a cruise as part of their course. We have strong links with major events, hospitality and tourism-related employers such as LiveNation, Cunard, Glastonbury Festival, Carnival P&O, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, and local and national airports – while our in-house student led and student run events management agency, Solent Works, offers plenty of chances for events students to polish their professional skills and build a network of professional connections in the real world. International study or work placement embedded into second year of study for six months or whole year on tourism and air degrees. What does this course lead to? This course will prepare you for an exciting and varied career within the air travel, tourism, or festival and event management industries. Solent graduates from these disciplines have gone into management jobs with leading cruise specialists such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean, or found permanent positions with event organisations and venue finders. Others have pursued a career in business event management, or heritage and cultural venues such as Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, while others have set up their own businesses to freelance around the world. Who is this course for? The Tourism and Event Foundation Year is ideally suited for those seeking to develop their all-round management and interpersonal skills with the aim of pursuing a career in leisure, events, festivals or travel and tourism. If you are not quite yet sure which of these industries is for you, this foundation year will allow you to explore your options while still developing industry recognised skills. There is no requirement to have previously studied a relevant tourism or events subject, but an interest in the local, national and international industries – and a desire to learn more – is essential.
