  • Gain the ability to apply principles of modelling, classical and modern control concepts and controller design packages.
  • Learn how to design and exploit automation and robotic systems in a range of manufacturing and industrial applications.
  • Work alongside research staff from the Power, Electrical and Control Engineering, and Electronic Engineering Subject Groups and the Centre for Automation and Robotics Research (CARR) at Sheffield Hallam.
In this course, you cover a wide range of topics, including control systems, advanced control methods, industrial robotics, mobile robots, industrial automation, and artificial intelligence. How You Learn: All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive. The course team provides you with a supportive and engaging learning environment throughout your studies. You experience and engage in a variety of learning methods as you progress through the course. We have designed a balanced mix of activities to enable knowledge acquisition, ensure understanding and develop you as a professional. In addition to this, you will also have access to a range of state-of-the-art, dedicated laboratories and workshops. You learn through:

This course is delivered face-to-face over three semesters - teaching is scheduled based on the length of your course and the academic calendar. Work experience is embedded midway through your course. Your dissertation module will be submitted upon completion of your placement. Applied Learning Work placements: You will have the opportunity to go on a work placement for up to 12 months. You are supported in finding placements and can apply for a vacancy as you would a job. There are dedicated sessions to support you in CV writing, interview skills and job applications. The placement starts during the summer of your second year and most are paid. The work placement is not guaranteed and you will be encouraged to be proactive in your placement search and the application process. Work-based learning: An MSc project and dissertation can provide an opportunity for industrially-commissioned or industrially-based work at a high level. MSc projects carried out by part-time students are typically of significant importance to their companies, and can raise a student's profile in the organisation.

Entry requirements

Normally one from • an honours degree (2.2 or above) in a science or engineering subject, • suitable professional qualifications in an engineering field, • a degree in any discipline containing aspects relevant to automation and control engineering, plus at least one year of appropriate industrial experience, • a diploma in a technological area, with at least three years of relevant experience. QUALIFICATIONS FROM INDIA • a first class BE in a relevant discipline, or a good second class BE with a strong performance in mechanical and manufacturing subjects. QUALIFICATIONS FROM CHINA • a four-year Bachelors degree in a relevant discipline, with an overall average of at least 80 per cent or equivalent Other countries • a good honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject. ENGLISH LANGUAGE QUALIFICATIONS: overseas applicants from countries whose first language is not English must normally produce evidence of competence in English. An IELTS score of 6.0 with 5.5 in all skills (or equivalent) is the standard for non-native speakers of English. If your English language skill is currently below an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English level.
