This degree is suitable for students who are looking for a career with a comprehensive grounding in computing. A strong interest in software technologies is a requisite, together with a desire to understand how they work and are built. Applicants should be motivated to keep up-to-date in a field in which rapid and accelerating change is the rule rather than the exception. The course is accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT and fully meets the further learning academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional. City's BSc (Hons) Computer Science focuses on how software and programming work can be used to solve real-world problems. This degree will enable you to develop a systematic knowledge of computer science, and you will be able to evaluate situations to computer science problems, assess current techniques as well as gaining an appreciation of the foundations of computation, acquire an understanding of the structure of programming languages and develop the skills to use coding creatively in solving computational problems. The School has its own dedicated placements team with over 20 years of experience in providing on-hand placement and internship support as well as guidance for students throughout their studies. Placements are highly encouraged at City. Students that complete a placement year benefit from gaining professional experience working on real-life projects and are also more likely to achieve higher grades, secure a graduate-level job and earn a higher salary. In recent years students from our computer science courses have been able to obtain placements at leading companies within their chosen field such as IBM, PlayStation, Disney, Microsoft and Goldman Sachs. City's unique location provides excellent work experience opportunities at nearby Tech City. Careers include programming and software development, research-based careers in the IT industry and higher degrees, such as a PhD. Recent Computer Science graduates have joined employers such as Accenture, Blackrock, Feral Interactive, Hamilton-Brown Business Graphics, Imaginations Technology, QA Consulting, Sky and Unruly Group.
All Computer Science courses at City share a common first year. Students can select their final degree course at the end of the first year. You will study six core modules. Core modules: Introduction to Algorithms Mathematics for computing Operating Systems Systems architecture Programming in Java Databases and Web Development In year two you will take a further six core modules and also undertake a project. Professional Pathway students take the core modules over a period of two years. Core modules: Data structures and algorithms Programming in C++ Language processors Computer Networks Object-orientated analysis and design Professional development in IT. Team project Work based project The course is available with or without a placement between year two and year three. In year three, full-time students take core modules in theory of computation and functional programming, with a further three elective modules. All BSc students undertake an individual project, researching and developing systems in an area of their own specialist interest.
