Course summary

This interdisciplinary programme offers you the opportunity to undertake sustained and focused study in the disciplines of politics and philosophy. With a number of staff working across Philosophy and Politics, our programme typically covers a variety of approaches to the study of both Philosophy and Politics You will take five taught modules each assessed by a 5,000 word essay. The programme culminates in the writing of a 20,000-word dissertation in a subject area of your own choosing that has been agreed in partnership with an academic supervisor. Throughout this programme our intention is to enable you to develop your research and analytical skills, skills that could be used in a range of careers. The programme can also provide a foundation for those looking to pursue academic careers.

Modules

Core modules: Theory and methods in postgraduate studies; what is philosophy? Methods, aims, debates; major approaches to the study of international relations; dissertation (standard). Optional modules may include: Globalisation: its meanings, causes and consequences; theorising security and war; doing contemporary philosophy; paternalism, autonomy and consent; conflict management and contemporary conflicts; politics and international relations of the Middle East; international relations and politics of South Asia; independent study module; theory and concepts in diplomacy and foreign policy; issues and practice in diplomacy and foreign policy.

Assessment method

Assessment is based on coursework and a dissertation.


Entry requirements

2:1 degree in a related subject is normally required. We will also consider applications where you have a degree in other subjects, have a 2:2 or equivalent result and/or extensive relevant experience. In these cases, you should clearly demonstrate how your experience and skills have prepared you for postgraduate study. We may ask you to provide a recognised English language qualification, dependent upon your nationality and where you have studied previously. We normally require an IELTS (Academic) Test with an overall score of at least 6.5, and a minimum of 5.5 in each element of the test. We also consider other English language qualifications.
