Course summary

“Please note: you can choose to study the Foundation Year in either our Bournemouth or London location. Levels 4, 5 and 6 will be taught from our Bournemouth location only.” This foundation course is designed for applicants who do not meet the admissions criteria for the BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science degree. You’ll start by completing a foundation year, which provides well-structured support. Following successful completion of the foundation year, you will progress with confidence to the first year of the BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science degree. Sport and Exercise Science is a more generic programme (accredited by BASES, British Association of Sports and Exercise Sciences) designed to offer students a broad exposure to the application of science across sport, exercise and health environments. The programme offers a broad range of modules in the final year that enables students to tailor the programme in line with their own specific interests and aspirations. The programme is built around a core of biomechanical, physiological, and psychological knowledge that is then applied in a diverse range of domains including injury rehabilitation, paediatric populations, sports performance, and exercise prescription and promotion. The programme also seeks to develop core skills that will be crucial to graduates future careers including: teamwork, communication, presentation, and critical thinking skills. The broad nature of the programme offers graduates a diverse range of options in terms of future employability including: Health care professionals (some require a conversion masters), sport science, coaching, teaching, research, fitness industry, health promotion.

Year 0 (foundation year) (subject to approval, unit titles may change) - Human Sciences I, Introduction to Healthcare, Personal and Professional Development, Gateway Extended Project, Human Sciences II, Foundations in Sport Performance and Rehabilitation Year 1 - Anatomy, Exercise Physiology, Psychology of Exercise, Health & Sport, Motor Learning & Biomechanics, Introduction to Research Methods, Interdisciplinary Approaches in Sport, Exercise and Health Science . Year 2 - Research Methods, Sport and Performance Psychology, Physiology of Sports Performance, Sports Biomechanics, Promoting Health and Wellbeing, Injury and Rehabilitation. Year 3 - Dissertation, Physical Activity Prescription and Promotion Optional units - Applied Sport Psychology, Advanced Physiology, Advanced Biomechanics, Paediatric Exercise and Health

You’ll be assessed by a variety of methods, these include coursework, examinations, group work and projects.

Qualification requirements

Applicants should normally hold 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above (C) including English and Maths. Key Skills/Functional Skills Level 2 in Communication and Application of Number can be accepted in place of English and Maths GCSE. However, applications will be viewed holistically and in line with our contextual admissions process. For mature or non-traditional applicants’ consideration will be given to individual circumstances.
