Course summary
From theory and practice in wellbeing to the challenges of social work practice in safeguarding, mental health, adoption and reflective practice to the exploration of extraordinary childhoods, digital childhoods and emotional lives – you’ll work with experts in their fields in a vibrant interdisciplinary research community. We host three research centres:
- Centre for Innovation and Research in Adult Wellbeing
- Centre for Innovation and Research in Childhood and Youth (jointly hosted by the Department of Education and the Department of Social Work and Social Care)
- Centre for Social Work Innovation and Research.
Modules
Recent PhD thesis titles include: Against the odds? A case study of developing community participation with vulnerable innercity children and young people; how do social workers construct emotional abuse cases?; why and how do older people choose to live in international communities in England?

Entry requirements
You should normally have a Masters degree and an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree. Your qualification should be in Social Research Methods or in a relevant subject area which includes significant research methods training. You may also be considered for the degree if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing.
