Midwifery at University of Salford - UCAS

Course summary

Midwives offer care and support to pregnant women, their partners and their families. They provide care throughout the pregnancy continuum which includes antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care. On successful completion of this degree, you will be eligible to register as a midwife on the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Professional Register. Midwifery is not a nine-to-five job and neither is being a student midwife. This could be the career for you if you are hardworking and committed, are prepared to work shifts, want to make a real difference and can see yourself working with people from all kinds of backgrounds. 50% of your studies will be spent on placement, gaining invaluable clinical experience, whilst on campus you will have access to dedicated facilities such as the birth simulation suite and clinical skills rooms. The programme is underpinned by national policy and will provide a broad, balanced, coherent and diverse experience of midwifery practice. Each year consists of a combination of theory and practice based modules. You will be expected to maintain a portfolio of personal and professional development (PDP). This course also includes an assessment of clinical skills and medicines management. The 'Practice' modules prepare you to achieve the clinical competencies throughout each year in order to progress towards fulfilling the role of accountable, autonomous practitioner at the point of registration. You will progress from the first year as a novice to an accountable practitioner at the end of year three. The University of Salford is a UNICEF Baby Friendly University and Salford students achieved the highest marks of any UK university within the Baby Friendly accreditation assessment in 2015.

Modules

During the first year of your studies, you will gain an insight into normal midwifery which will prepare you for midwifery practice. We offer a diverse range of hospital and community clinical placements. The second year of your studies will give you the opportunity to undertake a further three placements as well as learning about more complex care in midwifery. Your third year of study will delve deeper into the challenges associated with midwifery and the research behind the practices. You will also complete three placements, which will reinforce your learning and prepare you for becoming a qualified midwife.
