The MA Musical Theatre (Musical Direction/Performance/Community Practice – pathway open from Sept 2025) is a distinct programme offering bespoke specialist training at level 7. The programme is designed to extend and interrogate creative thought and theatrical boundaries, encouraging inter-disciplinary approach, imaginative application and the development of creative confidence and professional identity. The programme offers the opportunity to redefine musical theatre as a genre, moving beyond existing boundaries, through conceptual development, experimentation, innovation, and reinvention. Students will follow one of the three available pathways in Musical Direction, Performance or Community Practice – pathway open from Sept 2025. Key Features Develop industry relevant skills and techniques through the creation of co-authored and co-produced group and ensemble work within inclusive collaborative settings Creative thought will be extended and interrogated, looking at theatre creation through a world lens Discover how arts-based practice can instigate positive social change within communities and through the development of new audiences Students will be immersed in Trinity Laban’s vibrant creative community, with the programme designed to ensure engagement and exposure to a range of interdisciplinary practice that will enhance theoretical and practical understanding and develop vital artistic connections Learn from an experienced team of practitioners, artists and industry leaders

Principal study options

During the application and audition process, you must select which instrument(s) you wish to specialise in for the duration of your course. On this course, you can choose from the following options:

Single specialism

Only one instrument is studied. It may be possible to study a further instrument formatively, but this will not contribute towards the qualification.

Instrument/specialisms

For all courses, you must select at least one specialism from the 'primary' list. For those studying primary/secondary pathways, two instruments may be selected – one from the 'primary' list and one from the 'secondary' list. Joint pathway students may select any two instruments from either list.
