Course summary

On this degree, you will study what theatre has been, explore what it is, and imagine all that it can be. Through an innovative combination of theory and practice, you will develop your skills as a theatre-maker and creative thinker and prepare yourself for work in the creative industries and beyond. Theatre asks questions and opens up experimental spaces for things to unfold and happen, all in the excitement of the shared time. Supported by internationally-recognised staff with a wide range of expertise, on this degree you will experiment with texts, practices and production work and encounter a wide range of historic and contemporary theatre forms, from scripted drama to site-specific performance and from Shakespeare to experiments in new media. During the three years of this course, we engage you in a process of investigation and questioning that extends your critical and creative capacities and builds your practical skills. You will encounter and explore a wide range of contemporary theatre practices, from scripted drama to site-specific performance and from Shakespeare to experiments in new media. Studying Drama and Theatre Studies at Aberystwyth will prepare you for a variety of careers in the creative arts and beyond. We are a vibrant and creative department where drama and theatre, film and media, and scenography and theatre design collide. The department houses excellent teaching staff who will be your mentors during the course. Our academic staff have a wide range of expertise in research and professional theatre-making. You will benefit from our connections with key industry partners, such as National Theatre Wales, Music Theatre Wales, Quarantine Theatre Company, and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru. You will succeed with our superb facilities and resources for practical work: three rehearsal studios, each with flexible technical facilities; 2 large professionally-equipped studios with digital lighting rigs controlled via ETC Congo and Strand Lighting consoles, Yamaha and Soundcraft PAs, Sanyo AV systems and Strand lighting and two NXAMP; and costume and wardrobe facilities. One of our notable and esteemed alumni is Alex Jones who is currently the longest-running female presenter on the One Show. During her time at Aberystwyth University, Alex Jones studied Drama and Theatre Studies. Many of our students have been successful in obtaining employment in these fields: Acting and performing; Directing; Designing; Scriptwriting; Teaching and education; Arts administration; Marketing; Management; Public Relations.

A minimum grade C or grade 4 pass in GCSE (or equivalent) English or Welsh is a requirement for entry to all our degree schemes. Business, Mathematics, and Science degree schemes also require a minimum grade C or grade 4 pass in Mathematics and/or Science at GCSE (or equivalent).

Additional fee information

The UK and Welsh Governments have confirmed that EU students commencing their studies in the academic year 2021/22 will no longer be eligible for home fee status.
