The course is fully accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science. Biomedical Science is concerned with the integration of a wide range of subjects which underpin the scientific investigation of human health and disease. This course is designed to give students essential knowledge of the biology of disease, including modern concepts and applications of biomedical science in the research, diagnosis and treatment of clinical disorders. The course will encourage you to assimilate knowledge from core biological sciences to develop skills in the more specialised biomedical disciplines of clinical biochemistry, cellular pathology, haematology and blood transfusion and medical microbiology. There is now an urgent need in modern healthcare for graduates who are experienced in the advanced diagnostic and molecular techniques that are revolutionising disease diagnosis and treatment. You will gain theoretical and practical skills necessary to prepare for careers within the field of biomedical science. In addition to key knowledge of the laboratory investigation of disease, you will gain transferable skills and qualities required for employment in situations requiring the exercise of professionalism, independent thought and personal responsibility. In addition to well defined careers with the health service, biomedical scientists are in demand and are sought by a wide range of employers in areas such as pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, veterinary science, medical research, health and safety, food science, public health, forensic science, dentistry and post graduate Medicine. There may be an opportunity for those interested in forging careers in NHS Pathology laboratories to apply for voluntary work experience during the course. During this period it may be possible to follow a training programme designed to meet the requirements for eligibility to apply for registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council on completion.
