Course summary

This BA (Hons) Acting degree for Stage & Screen has been designed by working industry professionals to ensure students develop the skills required when performing for stage and screen, providing students with a drama school style experience outside of London. Students on this intensive acting course will receive 30 hours contact time a week to develop core skills in voice, characterisation and physicality. These skills will be utilised in performances for stage and screen, as well as working on contemporary and innovative performance practices. We aim for our graduates to become multi-faceted artists ready to enter the industry and with the skills to shape the future of the industry. The course is vocational focusing on students developing and creating their own practice as well as performance. Our Acting degree is professionally accredited and will allow graduates to gain Spotlight membership upon graduation. Our exciting course focuses on a collaborative approach to acting, creating a drama school atmosphere for our degree students whom work with a range of creative programmes, including Costume, Film TV and Theatre production, Photography, Production Designand Model Making & VFX to produce brand new material created by film and theatre scriptwriters. Because of our joint approach students have the opportunity to gain valuable communication skills and to generate a dynamic and original body of work. Performance students look at the core acting skills of voice, physicality and characterisation. Working on devised and scripted text for both stage and screen. You will be part of two full theatre productions each academic year to showcase the skills gained. This degree explores classical theatre, clowning and acting for media. Your three years of study will culminate in your final year enabling you to produce an extensive CV, professional standard show-reel, a full theatre production and a solo show at The ARC Theatre to agents and industry professionals. On this course we treat our students like actors in training, by working alongside guest lecturers and industry professionals from the theatre and film industries you will develop professional skills. As working actors we expect professional standards on all projects.

In course assessment. Each module is assessed upon completion and given a percentage mark.

It is also expected that you will bring evidence of written work to interview and/or have a Level 2 qualification in English/Literacy.

Audition

Please note there is NO audition fee. Eligible applicants will be invited to an audition, where they will be asked to demonstrate their acting skills by performing two out of three contrasting monologues (1 Classical and 1 Contemporary) lasting 2 minutes. As part of the audition you will also take part in a movement session lasting approximately 45 minutes. At the audition/interview you will have the opportunity to present your prepared speeches to the panel, who will then interview you. Your performance may be recorded on video by a member of the panel so that it can be reviewed at a later stage. The actual interview and audition will take about 10 minutes. We look for people who have some experience and knowledge of acting. This practical course is demanding and will appeal to individuals who are dedicated to pursuing acting careers for either stage or screen. When choosing your pieces, it would be beneficial to show a variety of abilities by contrasting the pieces appropriately. In preparing the speeches you should have read and be familiar with the play from which they have been taken so that you understand the character and the context within which they find themselves. You may also be asked questions about your choices and the play they come from in your interview. We also expect you to articulate your views in many different forms and to have the ability to carry out academic research and writing. As with most creative programmes delivered at higher education, this programme will have additional costs such as material and basic tools and contribution towards educational visits to ensure successful completion of the programme.
