Course summary

Course Overview Learn to investigate and develop innovative products and creative solutions to some of healthcare’s most significant issues. The rapid development of accurate diagnostic devices, capable of near-patient care, reduces the need for lab testing, accelerates decision making and therefore speeds up treatment. This programme provides the knowledge of essential concepts for designing and executing experiments in the context of healthcare applications – including diagnostics, point of care and pharmaceuticals. The World Health Organisation (WHO) advocates for the continued development and wider implementation of accurate, rapid, and affordable POCT, which is crucial for more effective infection identification, regardless of the health care infrastructure. You’ll further your learning with modules that examine production, implementation and quality assurance, whilst gaining up to date knowledge relating to emerging trends and technologies. Alongside subject-specific knowledge, you’ll also develop your critical thinking, problem solving and digital skills.

Modules

Theory of laboratory-based diagnostic methods and techniques [online] This module aims to provide you with an understanding of the principles underpinning standard laboratory diagnostic and health monitoring methods and to apply and interpret qualitative and quantitative analysis as appropriate. Principles of point-of-care [online] The aim of this module is to provide students with a detailed understanding of the issues and potential solutions of implementing point-of-care setting. Students will develop an appreciation of challenges raised when engaging with different professionals and anticipating user backgrounds and needs including the influence of level of education, socio-economic, culture and accessibility issues on engagement with testing. Experimental design for testing and evaluation [online] The aim of this module is to develop your experimental design skills by improving your understanding, use, interpretation and communication of statistical methods and analysis. Implementation of point-of-care-testing devices [online] The aim of this module is to give you a broad knowledge of the necessary regulatory and practical steps involved implementing new point-of-care devices. You'll develop an appreciation of the scale of context specific issues for implementation of devices in different use settings.  Quality Assurance Practices [online] The aim of this module is to introduce you to the requirements of ISO 15189:2022 and best practices to ensure quality, reliability, integrity, and competence in a clinical diagnostic setting. Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics [online] The aim of this module is to develop your understanding of drug action, how the human body handles drugs and how this can be modelled.   MSc Dissertation Individual in-depth investigation of a particular aspect of their own specialism. An opportunity to undertake individually an in-depth investigation in a relevant area of interest within an applied context in industry, consolidating theory and examining practice and providing a basis for the writing of a substantial dissertation.

Assessment method

Assessment will take the form of practical projects, reports and exams. You'll produce a research project reflecting on a work placement or area of study that has particular interest to you.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have an undergraduate degree (2.2 or better) in a related area. These include science and data analytics. Consideration will be given to applicants who have relevant professional experience in areas including biomedical science and other science fields, primary care and data analytics.
