With specialist teaching facilities, a diverse range of clinical placements and designed in line with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards, successful completion of this course enables you to register with the NMC as a midwife. The course also includes qualifications in Neonatal and Infant Physical Examination and the Baby Friendly Initiative. All teaching staff on the course are qualified midwives who have worked in practice, and many still do. This means tutors have a unique insight into issues which affect your academic and clinical experience. Placements usually take place across Birmingham’s NHS Trusts with continuous support and encouragement from both your personal tutor and midwifery mentors. Our facilities include a home birth environment, mock wards and teaching tools such as the PROMPT birth simulator and neonatal manikins to help simulate a variety of birth scenarios. You will gain broad and diverse experience within both consultant-led units and designated midwife-led birth centres during your studies.

More about foundation year programmes By studying a foundation year in either Health and Life Sciences, Children, Childhood and Education or Sport and Exercise Science, your first year will be spent learning a wide range of broad subject areas which then open up opportunities for you to specialise further in your next year – which would be the first year of a full degree programme. You will study very broad subjects in your foundation year, which is designed to prepare you for a range of courses and not just one particular BSc or BA degree. So although you are studying a BA or BSc in a specific course – for example, Children’s Nursing, Health Studies, Midwifery among many of possible options – the foundation year sets you up for a number of other possible degrees starting the following year. It may be that you don’t end up doing a degree in precisely the same subject as your foundation year. This flexibility is one of the great things about foundation year categories (Health and Life Sciences, Childhood and Education or Sport and Exercise Science), allowing you to find out more about your interests and talents before focusing on a three year degree. The foundation year also helps us at BCU to make sure we help to match you to the degree that fits you best. Important Note: Upon completion of your Foundation Year, you will be required to successfully complete the University’s selection process for the specific programme which will include an interview in order to proceed onto year one of the full degree programme. Entry onto year one of the degree programme will also be subject to a satisfactory DBS and Occupational Health Assessment.
