Course Overview This course is designed for those who have experience of working in construction and it will enhance your career prospects in the industry. This programme will develop your understanding of current health, safety, and welfare legislation and you will develop the skills to undertake risk assessments. You will also learn the techniques of how site investigation and evaluation can influence the design, construction, and maintenance of buildings and their substructures. We will provide opportunities for you to develop your skills in using analytical methods and statistics to solve problems as well as an understanding of the properties and structural behaviour of construction materials. You will also discover how market forces and government policies influence the construction industry. This course is a practitioner (skills-based) programme based on core areas that analyse building energy requirements in terms of the external environment and internal space and the effect of this built environment on energy resources. It considers the principles and analysis of associated building engineering systems, leading to the understanding of control, simulation, and modelling techniques. This course is made up of eight units – you will complete four mandatory units and four specialist units. The specialist units will enable you to study particular areas in depth. Through a group assignment, you will develop the skills needed to manage a project from the design stage through to its implementation. Course Highlights This programme is delivered by our fully qualified and professional staff who are all experienced construction practitioners, having worked as site operatives, site managers, and quantity surveyors. You will have the opportunity to undertake enrichment activities outside of Croydon College, with regular trips to exhibitions such as Eco-Build at the Excel Centre and on-site visits to construction sites. A key distinguishing feature of the college is our links with employers and the ways in which we incorporate this into your learning, with employers attending our popular employability events. Assessment Assessment is based on a combination of coursework, assignments, and some exams and assessment will vary from unit to unit. You will also be required to undertake some group and project work. Career Opportunities and Further Study A key progression path after studying this course is to the second or third year of a degree programme, or you could progress to a professional qualification offered by institutions such as the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and many more. Alternatively, you could enter in to employment as this course can open to doors to careers with design consultants and contractors.
