Course summary
Aiming to enable midwives and nurses to develop, deliver and direct high quality midwifery and maternity services within the context of the national and international drive toward improving maternity/health outcomes for the childbearing woman and her family. It also aims to equip midwives and nurses with the knowledge and skills required to operate at senior levels in today's maternity and health care services. Our Division of Midwifery offers a learning environment that facilitates the development of reflective, analytical and critical thinking and the ability to lead and manage change. As well as offering career development opportunities, this course is also an excellent foundation for those looking to purse a career in midwifery research.
Modules
You'll study a variety of topics across the programme, including: research methodology and design, challenging inappropriate medicalisation of childbirth, concepts of perinatal mental health, contemporary issues in infant feeding and nutrition; maternal and newborn health in a global context. You'll also complete a dissertation project. This is an investigatory module which develops your research skills in the field of midwifery.
Assessment method
Each module has an assessment that can take a variety of forms, for example: written assignments; online assessments; critical incident analysis; action plan development; evidence-based portfolios; oral presentation with supportive paper.
Entry requirements
2.2 (or international equivalent) in a related subject; applicants must be a registered midwife or nurse currently working within maternity services. International students will be required to have occupational health clearance, supply a declaration of good character and health form certified by their current employer and undertake governance training in order to undertake insight/observational visits. Please note if vaccinations are required, these will be at the student's own expense.
