Course summary

This PGCert programme is designed to prepare you for a career as a practice teacher in accordance with the standards published by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). It is aimed at nurses who hold Specialist Practitioner Qualifications (SPQ) and Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) qualifications, who fulfil NMC requirements and have normally completed a mentor programme to extend their role to assess and sign off practice students. The Postgraduate Certificate can be the first step towards a Postgraduate Diploma or an MSc in Health Studies.

Assessment method

The programme offers a combination of University and work-based learning. The two theory modules are based around themed study days covering the eight domains within the NMC. The practice-based module involves being placed with an experienced Practice Assessor who is responsible for supervising your progress and assessing your achievement of the practice learning outcomes. Learning methods include workshops, discussions, group work and lead lectures – enabling you to play an active part in your learning. All learning and teaching activities are supported by our virtual learning environment. There are no optional modules for this stage of the programme. If you want to register for the Postgraduate Diploma or MSc programme, your programme leader will help you to choose the best options. How to apply

International applicants

If you require a student visa to study or if your first language is not English you will be required to provide acceptable evidence of your English language proficiency level. This course requires academic IELTS 6.5 overall, with 5.5 in each skill. For other English language proficiency qualifications acceptable by this University, please click here. Entry requirements

Typically you are expected to have a good Honours degree in nursing, midwifery or another relevant discipline (or equivalent), plus appropriate experience in a professional environment. In order to ensure our students have a rich learning and student experience, most of our programmes have a mix of domestic and international students. We reserve the right to close applications early to either group, if application volumes suggest that this blend cannot be achieved. In addition, existing undergraduate students at the University of Hull have a guaranteed ‘Fast Track’ route to any postgraduate programme, subject to meeting the entry criteria (excluding Social Work).


English language requirements
