UCEN Manchester has opted into the TEF and received a Silver award.
The delivery on this award will be through a combination of specialised classes, one to one tutorials and workshops, offering students a range of learning opportunities to develop their own creative ideas alongside specific and highly sort after technical skills. In the first year of the award students will explore a wide range of techniques and processes within 3D modelling, development and application. In doing so this will provide each student the chance to experience the many different roles of a 3D artist whilst gaining a more specific understanding or their own personal direction. The second year of the award will focus more on expanding personal creative and technical knowledge within 3D applications and in turn, using such skills and knowledge in a professional context through a range of industry facing projects. Students will be presented with a variety of opportunities to work with real clients on a given project and to develop not only their own technical practice, but wider employability skills. The award will be delivered by industry specialist staff supplemented by a range of guest speakers supported through an established and strong network of contacts. Students will benefit from having constant access to industry standard software and offered full technical and pastoral support throughout. The Foundation Degree 3D Modelling and Animation course aims to give students an excellent experience educationally whilst preparing them fully for the creative 3D industry. Students will be continually encouraged to put creativity first through challenging assignments. In parallel, the development of report writing, critical reflection and personal self-evaluation of their own skills will be fundamental building blocks within all assignments, enabling students to become effective self-managers and therefore highly employable digital creatives.
Examples of current modules- 3D Texturing This unit introduces the use and application of texture design within the 3D design process. Students will cover a wide range of texturing skills which will enable them to develop a significant industry workflow such as research and design, optimisation of 3D assets, and application of textures. 3D Modelling and Concept Design This unit is introduces a combination of concept design methods and 3D modelling techniques using specialised 3D software in order to learn the art of modelling. A wide range of skills within digital modelling are covered starting from the very basic to an intermediate stage. This will best prepare students to complete a 3D design assignment. Animation Animation is the key to adding realism and life to a 3D model. This unit will introduce students to a range of theoretical animation methods, research and technical development using specific 3D software. A primary focus in this unit is to explore key theoretical principles of animation and how they are used in existing practice 3D Project Management Mirroring industry practise, students will benefit from shared learning experience working as part of a team in order to create a digital project. Students will assume industry roles and manage their professional progress. Subject Specialist Area This unit allows students to experiment with a range of digital and traditional materials, methods and making processes and encourages the use of risk taking and problems solving to support their subject specialism.
The course is assessed with one assignment per module. Students are encouraged to be creative through all assignments but must meet a certain criteria given by the tutor. Development of report writing and self-awareness / evaluation of own skills are built into assignments to enable students to develop themselves. GCSE English Language and Mathematics A* to C, (or 9 to 4 where numeric grades are being awarded) Students that have passed a recognised Access programme will also be considered. Applicants who do not meet the standard entry criteria but have previous learning towards a degree-level qualification or relevant industry or life experience will be considered on an individual basis and may be invited to interview.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for 3D design, games and media and can work as part of a team. You will be expected to have a basic knowledge of 3D modelling and must be able to present a working portfolio of sketch/concept ideas and work. Applicants should be highly motivated and have strong interests in many areas of 3D design, game design and media.
