Course summary

Prepare for a fast-paced career in financial technology – and broaden your skills and experience by studying overseas – with our BSc Finance (FinTech) with Study Year Abroad degree. FinTech is a rapidly expanding sector within the financial industry. You’ll study the core concepts and practises of financial technology, and learn how technological advances have necessitated change throughout the industry. This four-year course develops the knowledge and skills to meet these changes head-on, as you acquire a deep understanding of finance and financial services. You’ll also gain expertise in programming and financial applications, and learn how to apply your technological skills to real-world problems. You’ll enrich this learning and broaden your life experience with an integrated Study Year Abroad. Experts from from Henley Business School will introduce you to the:

  • fundamental principles of accounting, finance and economics
  • quantitative techniques of finance
  • role of finance in business and society
  • ethics required to work in the finance industry.
As your studies progress, you’ll explore the key concepts of financial technology, including:
  • the management of information systems
  • programming for finance
  • digital business
  • cryptocurrencies.
You’ll learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, practical workshops, and self-guided study. This will provide the opportunity to discuss subject materials in an in-depth way with your lecturers and fellow students. The University of Reading is a CFA partner university. Within this partnership, a number of scholarships are offered towards CFA exams (partial fee reduction) for which students can apply. Ranked in the top 25 in the UK for Accounting and Finance (23rd in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide, 2024). Triple-accredited status from the UK, European and US accrediting bodies (AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB). In your third year, you’ll have the opportunity to continue your studies at one of our overseas partner universities. Modules

The following modules have been approved in principle for delivery in 2025/26. Please note that as part of our current curriculum improvement process, all modules require final University approval and may be subject to change. Core modules for this course: Introductory Quantitative Techniques for Business and Finance; Ethics in Investment Management; Introductory Securities and Markets; Programming for Finance; Information Systems and Digital Business. The University cannot guarantee that all optional modules will be available to all students who may wish to take them. Further information about the content of final approved modules will be available in the summer of 2024.
