Course summary
Begin building an inspiring career in therapy or psychology at Roehampton, where we have an international reputation as a centre for therapeutic training. This BA Therapeutic Psychology degree is designed to launch you into a career in psychology or therapy. The course combines Roehampton’s well-established strengths in counselling, psychology, and arts and play therapies. It is designed for students who would like a career in the helping professions, without becoming a chartered psychologist. The degree is taught be expert lecturers, and has the option of a one-year paid work placement. You will be taught by leading psychology and counselling experts and practitioners who bring their real life experiences into the classroom. You will develop a range of skills designed to your skills and broaden your theoretical understanding of the mind and develop your practical experience, and personal development. This well-rounded learning approach, alongside voluntary work experience, will give you a strong foundation for your career in the therapy field or further education within postgraduate training courses. We offer modules that will give you excellent first-hand counselling experience. In ‘Introduction to the Arts and Play Therapies’, you will explore how the therapeutic relationship can be mediated through an art form and how to deliver therapy through play for a range of people. In the ‘Practice of Counselling Skills’ module, you will develop your counselling and communication skills through various practical and written exercises and presentations. In ‘Psychology in Action’ you will design your own research project to explore the role that evidence plays in psychological research. Taught on our south-west London campus, on this degree you will have access to excellent facilities, and many opportunities for work experience through our Careers Team, and access to face-to-face and 24/7 online careers support, whether you choose to live on campus or commute to us. This course offers all students the option of a one-year paid work placement, to boost your employability even further. If you choose this route, you will take the placement following year two of your course, and then return to complete your degree. A placement year is the perfect opportunity to gain valuable work experience, to build on the career skills we will teach you on this degree. The connections you make on the placement will improve your career prospects further, and equip you with the skills you need to secure graduate-level employment.
Modules
In the first year, you will receive an introduction to the subject areas of psychology, counselling and the arts and play therapies. At the end of year one, you will understand the theoretical, and practical contexts of counselling and therapies, different psychological models and the value of the creative process and exploring the self for your future development as a practitioner. In your second year, you will gain a deeper understanding of human behaviour and gain a strong foundation for self-awareness. You will also learn skills related to professional client work in preparation for your volunteer work experience in year three. In your final year, you will get the opportunity to work in a voluntary placement concerned with helping people with psychological needs.
