This degree builds on the industry-recognised HNC. All first year entrants will start on the HNC and the entry requirements are therefore for this programme. Successful completion will allow you to progress onto the second year of the degree. Applicants already holding a relevant HNC qualification can apply for direct entry to the second year. When completing your application make sure you choose year two. It may be possible for applicants holding a relevant HND qualification to apply for direct entry to year three, again where this is the case please make sure you choose year three when completing your application. Created by professional musicians, this honours degree will help you to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence required by employers, and for self-employment, in the music industry. The BA (Hons) Popular Music degree at Perth College UHI is a highly rated and well-established music course that will equip you with the portfolio of skills and knowledge required for a successful career in today’s music industries. On successful completion you will be able to enter areas of employment such as performing, composing, song-writing, instrumental teaching, music production and enter academic teaching and research through future postgraduate study. By learning from staff who are professional performers, composers and academics, you will be encouraged to thoroughly develop both your creative talents and your critical thinking in a positive, stimulating learning environment. You will develop and strengthen a variety of skills such as music theory, research and analysis and be supported and guided by staff to explore your full creative potential in all course work - from song writing and composition, to collaboration in band/ensemble work, to how you engage with research in understanding the field of music industries. Additionally, you will engage with studies in music business and audio to complement your core coursework in popular music.

Audition
You should prepare and perform a piece that demonstrates your skillset on your instrument or voice and, for writers, this can be an original composition or song. Your instrument or vocal ability should be equivalent to Associated Board grade 4/5.

Additional fee information
This is a Top-Up Degree whereby Year 1 of the course comprises an HNC and in some cases Year 2 an HND. Courses which comprise an HN award as their first and/or second year will be charged the Higher National fee for the first and/or second year, increasing to the degree fee rate after this. Please see the course page for specific fees details. RUK students will be charged the RUK HN fee for the Higher National portion of the programme and the degree portion will be charge at the RUK degree fee, the fourth year of consecutive study on the programme is free.
EU/EEA and Swiss nationals starting their study in Scotland from academic year 2021-22, who do not have settled status, will be considered as international for fee purposes. For 2021-22, the university offered an automatic scholarship for the degree (3rd) year and the 4th year of study free for those studying full-time, on continuous study. A decision on scholarships for 2022-23 entry is still to be confirmed.
