Course summary

This Postgraduate Certificate has been designed for those interested in gaining accreditation and specialist knowledge in the education of children and adults on the autism spectrum. Through critical debate you will explore the current understanding of autism and evaluates how theory and research has been applied to educational provision and practices. The education of children and young adults on the autism spectrum has been a key area for development on government agendas and in local authority education policies. As educationalists, we need to rethink how children and young adults on the autism spectrum are learning in inclusive classrooms, how we recognise their skills and abilities and create opportunities for them to have a say in how they learn. Successful completion of the PGCert Autism Education will give you 60 credits towards the MA Inclusive Special Education. On this course you will:

  • Gain specialist knowledge in the education of children and adults on the autism spectrum.
  • Earn 60 credits towards an MA in Inclusive Special Education.
  • Learn from experts with personal, practical, and academic experience of autism.
Our PGCert Autism Education course allows you to rethink how autistic children and young adults are learning in inclusive settings, how we recognise their skills and abilities, and create opportunities for them to have a say in how they learn.

Assessment method

Assessments equate to 6,000 words for each 30-credit module. Each module has a distinct criterion for each assessment based on the modules core content. You will be encouraged to complete assignments that are linked to your workplace practice and personal interest. Assessed work typically includes oral presentations, case studies, observational studies, literature reviews and action research.


Entry requirements

An honours degree at 2:2 or higher. If English is not your first language then English language proficiency required is IELTS 6.5 (with no element less than 5.5) – or equivalent qualification.
