Course summary

Construction technicians are responsible for the design and implementation of a wide range of construction projects, from consultation and advisory roles, to contractor-based work, in sectors such as: industrial, commercial and domestic structures; energy; infrastructure; and landmark projects, such as Inverness College UHI Campus. The HNC Built Environment will specifically develop your knowledge and skills in areas such as: building measurement; cost studies; environmental building science; building services; construction materials; sketching and drawings; sustainability; and off-site construction. Investment in the Highlands and Islands, as well as excellent links with employers such as Compass, Forestry Commission, Morrison Construction, Makar, Pat Munro and Robertson Construction, provides exciting opportunities for our students, who are involved in live projects, placements and employment. Delivery will focus on the strengths of the region, working in remote and sensitive areas whilst creating a vision for the future. You will gain contemporary vocational skills including study, research, analysis, planning and organisational skills. You will also learn to take responsibility for your own learning, and develop abilities to be flexible and work co-operatively with others. The course is taught within a classroom environment with practical experience gained from workshops, field trips and site visits. Please see our course webpage for information on Technology guidance and System requirements to study this course.
