Course summary

The Higher National Diploma (HND) Agriculture is the ideal follow on from the Higher National Certificate (HNC) Agriculture, in your chosen pathway (General Agriculture, Livestock Production or Crop Production). The aim of the Higher National Diploma in Agriculture (Livestock Production) is to provide you with the knowledge and skills needed for a successful career in agriculture through a combination of academic study, practical classes, work experience and study visits. What will I study?

Learning and teaching approach For all modules, theory lectures are delivered that aim to facilitate the core content and provide the underpinning knowledge. To complement the theory lectures, students have group seminars / practical sessions that are used to reinforce concepts delivered theoretically. The focus of the teaching approach is to give a model that can be applied in the work place, putting theory into practice and vice versa. The teaching methods focus on facilitating a student centred approach to enhance the independent learning that takes place outside of the classroom. What is the contact time? Approximately 16 hours a week to include lectures, seminars, work experience, practicals and tutorials. Students are also expected to carry out a significant amount of private study in addition to contact time (25-30 hours a week). Part-time is also available. Students can expect to receive their timetables during induction week. What else can I expect?

What kind of job could I get when I graduate? Students graduating from this programme could follow careers in farm management, genetic technologists, trainee agronomists, machinery dealerships, livestock nutrition as well as farm advisory roles.

Assessment method

Assessment methods include case studies, presentations, real life management problems, problem-based scenarios and reflective assignments. Opportunities for feedback on assessments are available prior to the final submission to support student development and achievement. Staff aim to return assessed work within a 15 working day timeframe (not including holidays) in order that students can most benefit from the feedback.
